BBC Radio 4 – Desert Island Discs

Professor Alice Roberts
A Proper Person!

I’ve long been a fan of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. When they get the right guest on I sit glued to the radio and that’s just what happened this week. The guest was the amazing Professor Alice Roberts.

I was struck by her enthusiasm for science and all that that entails. How excited she was to help people of all levels of education understand the world we live in and I was also struck by how similar our lives have been. How she has faced family upheaval, rejected religion and her acceptance of a Humanist philosophy all rings so true with me.

She talked about not being religious but that she felt a spiritual connection to nature, to her surroundings and to all the people throughout history who went before her. I can really get my head around that sort of thinking.

I strongly recommend putting half an hour aside sometime and listing to the particular episode. You won’t regret it.
