New project, going mobile

Last week I played around with popping a 2m/70cm HT in the car. I used a little an Anytone radio, a cup holder mount and a good Nagoya antenna on the roof of the car. This was basically a proof of concept to see how it worked out and about mobile in Nottingham.

I’m extremely happy with the results. So now I need to upgrade the radio to a proper 2m/70cm 50w rig. To that end I’m going to be mounting a Yaesu FTM-150ASP in the boot of my car, with the head unit mounted up front on a Lido L-Max Mount.

For now I’ve placed orders for everything other than the mount and radio to allow me to carry out the “engineering” tasks to get everything ready for the radio in a few weeks time.

You might me wondering why I went for this particular radio. Well, I actually love the Icom IC-2730E Black Screen Edition but Icom have really dropped the ball on this radio with the mic connecting only to the base unit and just about everything to mount the radio an extra purchase.

Additionally, I would have going for the Yaesu FTM-500/510 but I really don’t think I’ll use the C4FM digital mode that makes the radio so expensive when I’m out mobile.
