We can not allow it to happen again
Today, 27th January 2025 is the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by allied forces from the Nazis.
We watch old films of what happened and listen to the memories of the victims of the holocaust but only the survivors who were there will ever really know what it was like. It’s fair to to say it’s one of the lowest points in human history.
I think since then we have tried to never allow such horrors to happen again. We have mainly seen the need to work together to resolve conflicts and we have understood that we need to protect the vulnerable and disadvantaged among us rather than eliminating them.
While I think we have made great progress as the “human race” I fear that we are slipping back towards allowing politicians and world leaders to use hatred and fear to gain power and shape our world in dreadful ways again.
Only this week “President” Trump unleashed his clear hatred on the LGBTQ+ community and other diversity groups in ways that in my opinion should exclude him from any and all positions of power, let alone the Presidency of the United States of America.
And just like in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, nobody is standing up and saying what is happening is wrong.
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
We need to stand up now and stop this before it’s too late.
